While hand knitting is a fun and relaxing hobby, machine knitting will allow you to complete projects in a fraction of the time. It is a craft that is easy to learn and requires little equipment to begin. Many knitters will start with a pair of needles, a skein of yarn and a book or DVD with instructions on how to knit. While knitting has been around since the fourth or fifth century, its popularity has hit highs and lows over the hundreds of years that it has been in existence.

To ensure that your next knitting project will be the right size, you must check your gauge before starting your knitting. In a perfect world, everyone could cast a certain type of yarn on a certain sized needle and get the same result. The truth is that everyone knits with a different tension, so some people knit a little tighter or a little looser than standard.

A needle gauge is a tool that can help you determine the size of your needles and check the gauge of your work. This is helpful if you have knitting needles that are not marked with sizes. Simply insert your needle into each of the holes of your needle gauge until you find the perfect fit.

Are you considering taking up knitting? Here are a few things you should know before embarking on your new hobby. It can be an extremely enjoyable and relaxing hobby. Fortunately, it doesn’t take too long to go from your first swatch to making beautiful, handmade projects.

Take a trip to your local yarn store or craft store to get started. I highly recommend using bamboo needles as a beginner, as they have plenty of “grab” to them. Once you get the hang of the stitches, you can progress to metal needles. Pick out a yarn of a thick gauge. I especially recommend Berroco Weekend Chunky, Berroco Vintage Chunky, and Lion Brand Thick and Quick.

The art collective Knit the City have been entertaining the masses with their sneaky stitching since 2009, and have themselves made graffiti knitting history by changing the original specifics of the art form. But here is where it all began.

They formed in February 2009, after five people were anonymously invited to join the mysterious Deadly Knitshade, known to mere mortals as Ms Lauren O’Farrell, in her journey to create a cosier London. Together, they took on secret identities, masked themselves, and took to the streets in woolly do-gooder fashion to bring life and warmth to the plain and somewhat chilly monuments and such like objects of inner city London.
